Credit systems beyond physicians: nursing CE and PA category A
Nurses, nurse practitioners, physician associates and pharmacists track different credits: ANCC contact hours, AAPA categories, ACPE for pharmacy.

You will learn how nursing development under ANCC, pharmacy education under ACPE, and interprofessional education under Joint Accreditation run in parallel in the United States. Nurses earn credit through ANCC-accredited organizations, pharmacists earn credit through ACPE-accredited providers, teams learn together through Joint Accreditation, and PA fellowships appear under a separate ANCC fellowship accreditation.
The details cited in this entry were checked on ANCC Accreditation program page.
Why each profession keeps its own accreditor
If you hold a license in more than one state or work in a mixed team, you quickly see that credit is not generic. Each profession defines what counts as learning, who may offer it, and what standard the offer must meet. That separation explains why a nurse, a pharmacist, and a physician assistant can sit in the same room and still record different types of credit. To place these rules in context, you can review how the US CME system works and then trace which accreditor stands behind each certificate you receive.
What does ANCC accreditation cover for nurses?
The American Nurses Credentialing Center describes accreditation as recognition of high-quality nursing continuing professional development, interprofessional continuing education, and transition to practice programs. Around the world, ANCC-accredited organizations give nurses the knowledge and skills to help improve care and patient outcomes. The same program also recognizes continuing nursing education, residency, and fellowship programs, and skills-based competency programs. For you, the practical point is simple. Look for the ANCC name on the provider, not only on the course title, because the organization holds the accreditation.
Who can offer accredited nursing development?
ANCC recognizes development and delivery of high-quality nursing continuing professional development by organizations worldwide. The list expressly includes health ministries, nursing organizations, employers, and education providers. That breadth matters if you change jobs. A hospital education department, a national nursing association, and an independent education company can all hold the same type of recognition if they meet the standard. The ANCC Accreditation page and the ACPE about page do not publish contact hour totals, Category 1 rules, or documentation forms.
How does pharmacy education stay under ACPE?
The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education sets standards for the education of pharmacists to prepare them for pharmacist-provided patient care. Since 1932 it has worked with educational institutions and organizations to ensure excellence in the pharmacy profession. It is recognized by the United States Department of Education as the national agency for accreditation of professional degree programs in pharmacy. It also serves as the national agency for accreditation of providers of continuing education. When you take a pharmacy activity, you are therefore relying on a provider accreditation system, not on approval of a single lecture.
What does the history tell you about pharmacy credit?
The ACPE story helps you read older certificates with more care. It began as the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education in 1932 and took the name Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education in 2003. It first set standards for the baccalaureate degree in pharmacy, then added doctor of pharmacy standards as an alternative, and in 2000 announced the conversion to the doctor of pharmacy as the sole entry-level degree. In 1975 it developed standards for approval, now accreditation, of providers of continuing pharmacy education, and in 1999 it developed additional standards for providers conducting certificate programs in pharmacy.
Where do nurses and pharmacists learn together?
Some activities accept an interprofessional audience by design. Organizations may be simultaneously accredited to provide medicine, pharmacy, and nursing continuing education activities through Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education. You can see the current scope in the ANCC Accreditation program page alongside the nursing, transition, and fellowship routes. For your planning, the learning formats guide helps you compare live and enduring options before you register for a joint activity.
Where do physician assistant fellowships fit?
If you are a physician assistant, the nursing and pharmacy routes described here do not define your credit. The ANCC Accreditation program page names you in one place. The Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Accreditation gives teams the clinical and assessment skills and confidence to perform effectively by offering PA and APRN fellowships aligned with ANCC evidence-based standards. That is a fellowship accreditation for organizations that run PA fellowships, not a general continuing education credit for short courses. Check whether your fellowship program itself holds that accreditation.
What about residencies for new nurses?
Transition to practice has its own track inside ANCC. The Practice Transition Accreditation Program is built for organizations that offer RN or APRN residencies and fellowships aligned with ANCC evidence-based standards. The stated aim is to give the team the clinical and assessment skills and confidence to perform effectively. If you precept new graduates, this distinction helps you explain to a new nurse why a residency certificate looks different from a continuing development certificate, even when both carry an ANCC mark.
How do you keep parallel credits straight?
Think in terms of accreditor, audience, and program type. ANCC-accredited organizations address nursing development and transition programs. ACPE-accredited providers address pharmacy education, including international evaluation and certification of professional degree programs and, in collaboration with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, accreditation of pharmacy technician education and training programs. Joint Accreditation addresses organizations that serve medicine, pharmacy, and nursing together. Your state board still decides what it will accept at renewal, so state rules remain the final filter. You can compare those board variations in the overview of state CME requirements.
What should you check before you claim credit?
Read the certificate for three facts. Which body accredited the provider, which profession or professions formed the intended audience, and whether the activity was continuing development, a certificate program, a residency, or a fellowship. Keep that certificate with the program description and the date, and match the accreditor name to the language your board uses at renewal. Pull your last certificate now and confirm that the accreditor, audience, and program type line up before you log it.
